In addition to foliage changes seen in landscape trees and shrubs, a select number of perennials contribute to the autumnal leaf colors. Here is a select list of popular perennials endeared for their autumnal foliage hues.<\/p>\n

Arkansas bluestar (Amsonia hubrichtii<\/em>) – stunning golden foliage beginning in late September.<\/p>\n

Bloody cranesbill (Geranium sanguineum<\/em>) – geranium ground cover with reddish purple foliage color in October; Geranium x<\/em> ‘Rozanne’ foliage develops a bronze-red tint; G. macrorrhizum<\/em> \u2018Ingwersen\u2019s Variety\u2019 – mixed foliage turns an attractive red color in fall.<\/p>\n

Jacob’s ladder (Polemonium\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0‘Bressingham Purple’) turns royal purple foliage in spring and fall; summer foliage is vibrantly green.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ferns (selected ferns) \u2013 Autumn fern (Dryopteris erythrosora<\/em>), Royal fern (Osmunda regalis<\/em>); Sensitive fern (Onclea<\/em>)<\/p>\n

Selected forms of sedums (Sedum spp<\/em>.) develop yellow and orange shades in fall. example: S.\u00a0 rupestre<\/em> ‘Angelina’<\/p>\n

Bronze-leaf rodgersia (Rodgersia podophylla<\/i>) takes on coppery red and yellows shades in the fall; annual fall color is highly variable.<\/p>\n

Dwarf Variegated Solomon seal (Polygonatum odoratum<\/em> \u2018Variegatum’) is rarely recognized by gardeners.<\/p>\n

Leadwort (Ceratastigma plumbaginoides<\/em>) – low mounding groundcover awakens very late in spring. Deep green leaves develop splashes of red in fall. Blue, starry flowers bloom in late summer into fall.<\/p>\n

Herbaceous Peony (Paenonia lactiflora<\/em>) – fall color is iffy among peony varieties; some may turn rusty orange lasting a week or more.<\/p>\n

Golden aralia (Aralia cordata <\/em>‘Sun King’) – golden foliage hangs on through October.<\/p>\n

Ornamental grasses (Miscanthus sinensis<\/em>); Japanese bloodgrass (Imperata cylindrica<\/em>); pink muhly grass (Muhlenbergeri capillaris<\/em>) or white\u00a0M. capillaris<\/em> ‘White Cloud’ inflorescences; foliage of assorted sedges (Carex spp<\/em>).<\/p>\n

Several forms of switchgrass (Panicum virgatum<\/em>) \u2013 \u2018Northwind\u2019 (autumnal\u00a0 yellow leaf blades), \u2018Shenandoah\u2019 (reddish tones 0n leaf blades), \u2018Cheyenne Sky\u2019 (dark maroon leaf tips)<\/p>\n

Bellwort, merrybells (Uvularia perfoliata<\/em>) \u2013 yellow fall leaf color lasts 7-10 days.<\/p>\n\n\n
