Enjoy their winter architecture. Perennial grasses should be cut back to 3- to 6 inches\u00a0 in late winter.<\/p>\n<p>Here are an assortment of six of the very best along with\u00a0several varieties that you should plant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fountain grasses<\/strong> (<em>Pennisetum spp.<\/em>) represent decorative ornamental annual grasses (zones 9-11). My favorites in the group are &#8216;Fireworks&#8217;, &#8216;Cherry Sparkler&#8217;, and &#8216;Rubrum&#8217;. &#8216;P. orientale &#8216;Karley Rose&#8217; is a zone 6 hardy perennial form that has proven to be highly reliable over many years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hakone grasses<\/strong> (<em>Hakonechloa macra<\/em>) are short growing accent grasses from Japan. They thrive in shady garden areas as well as are included as accent plants in container designs. Three popular varieties are &#8216;Aureola&#8217;, &#8216;All Gold&#8217; and the green species <em>H. macra<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10483\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Carex-ohm-Everillo-1.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10483\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10483\" src=\"https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Carex-ohm-Everillo-1-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Carex-ohm-Everillo-1-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Carex-ohm-Everillo-1-768x509.jpg 768w, https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Carex-ohm-Everillo-1-1024x678.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10483\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carex oshimensis &#8216;Everillo<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Feather reed grasses<\/strong> (<em>Calamagrostis spp<\/em>.) &#8211; grow 3-5 feet tall and 1\u00a0-2 feet\u00a0wide. It\u00a0has tight upright stance,\u00a0and\u00a0planted in multitudes to show off its erect architecture. The feathery plumes emerge in early summer and ripen to handsome wheat-colored seed heads\u00a0in fall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Japanese Sedges<\/strong> (<em>Carex oshimensis<\/em>) \u00a0so many great ones to choose from-. Everest&#8217; and &#8216;Everillo&#8217; (chartreuse foliage) are two favorites in this group.\u00a0<em>Carex morrowii &#8216;<\/em>Ice Ballet\u00ae and &#8216;Ice Dance&#8217; are also favorites for moist well partially sunny areas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>*Little bluestem<\/strong> (<em>Schizachyrium spp<\/em>.) &#8211; &#8216;The Blues&#8217; with\u00a0stunning blue foliage, &#8216;Blaze&#8217; for fall color, and &#8216;Standing Ovation&#8217; (bluish-green, semi-erect habit) (zones 3-9).<\/p>\n<p><strong>*Sea\u00a0oats<\/strong> (<em>Chasmanthium latifolia<\/em>)\u00a0<em>is<\/em>\u00a0a 2-5 feet tall clump-forming ornamental native grass. It is easily identified\u00a0by their flat, drooping seed heads which hang in terminal clusters on arching stems. Seed heads flutter in the slightest of\u00a0breezes. Seed heads emerge green but turn purplish bronze\u00a0in late summer. Bright green leaves (5-9&#8243; long) turn a coppery color after frost and eventually brown by winter.
