Let&#8217;s start with the cultivars &#8216;Ace of Hearts&#8217; and sister seedling &#8216;Little Woody&#8217; which may\u00a0set\u00a0fewer than a dozen\u00a0per tree per year.\u00a0&#8216;Hearts of Gold&#8217; (with chartreuse foliage) often\u00a0sets low\u00a0pod numbers one year and\u00a0produces heavy amounts\u00a0the next.\u00a0\u00a0&#8216;Forest Pansy&#8217; (with dark purple foliage) sets\u00a0a\u00a0small\u00a0scattering of\u00a0pods annually.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Merlot&#8217; is a new glossy wine red\u00a0foliage redbud from the North Carolina State\u00a0Redbud Breeding program, and it produces few pods. The pods\u00a0which form after flowering\u00a0rarely set viable seeds\u00a0and the pods abort\u00a0early.\u00a0&#8216;Flame&#8217; is a rare double flowering form,\u00a0most of which are sterile and the tree sets very few pods.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Don Egolf&#8217; Chinese redbud (<em>C. chinensis<\/em> &#8216;Don Egolf&#8217;) is female sterile and develops no seed pods.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Traveller&#8217; (<em>C. texensis<\/em>) is a weeping\u00a0redbud hardy to Zone\u00a06 and its flowers are sterile and podless.\u00a0\u00a0&#8220;I have seen only one pod on &#8216;Traveller&#8217; in 20 years&#8221;, says Dr. Dennis Werner, NCSU Ornamental Plant Breeder.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A few years back\u00a0my church\u00a0pastor complained about the ugly\u00a0load of\u00a0seed pods\u00a0covering the redbud branches (Cercis canadensis) on the property in the fall.\u00a0My suggestion to avoid\u00a0messy seed pods is to plant seedless redbud\u00a0cultivars.
