None are native to North America, but\u00a0most thrive in gardens in the\u00a0Southern Appalachian region (USDA zones 6 and 7). There are currently\u00a021 known species worldwide.<\/div>\n<div>Also called Bishop&#8217;s hat, barrenworts are one of\u00a0our finest groundcovers\u00a0for part sun\u00a0to part shade areas. Some are evergreen or others deciduous\u00a0with leaves gradually turning red, purple, crimson and scarlet in\u00a0late fall. Most species grow 6-12 inches in height.<\/div>\n<div>The dictionary\u00a0defines the word &#8220;wort&#8221; as &#8220;a herbaceous plant lacking a permanent woody stem&#8221;\u00a0or &#8220;a flowering plants\u00a0important as a medicinal herb&#8221;. Barrenworts are both. Barrenworts are woodland plants\u00a0which are used as\u00a0groundcovers woodland garden or shaded rock garden.\u00a0Plants are slow growing at first and\u00a0newer varieties are expensive to purchase.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>A soil should be well amended with organic matter and kept moderately moist to speed fill-in. Once they become established, barrenworts are tough survivors in dry shady areas of the garden.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you grow evergreen or deciduous types,\u00a0cut them back (4 &#8211; 5 inches\u00a0mowing height)\u00a0to the ground in late winter to visibly enjoy the small white, yellow, pink or red flowers, depending on the species grown.
