Here are ten of my favorites listed alphabetically by genus:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bottlebrush Buckeye (<em>Aesculus parvifolia<\/em>)<\/strong> \u2013 foliage of this summer flowering shrub turns bright yellow in fall. (zones 4-8)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Red Chokeberry (<em>Aronia arbutifolia<\/em>)<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; under-planted native shrub that grows 6 &#8211; 10 feet\u00a0high. White flowers appear in\u00a0early spring; recommend compact cultivar \u2018Brilliantissima\u2019 with attractive glossy red berries and red fall foliage color. (zones 4-9)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fothergilla\u00a0<\/strong><strong>(<em>Fothergilla gardenii<\/em>) or (<em>F.\u00a0<\/em>x \u2018Mt. Airy\u2019)<\/strong> <strong>&#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0both selections are among the finest\u00a0spring flowering shrubs along with red fall leaf color. (zones 5-8)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oakleaf Hydrangea<\/strong><strong> (<em>Hydrangea quercifolia<\/em>) <\/strong>\u2013 is a highly variable flowering shrub, available in a range of sizes from 3-25 feet. Some varieties\u00a0exhibit exceptional red or bronze foliage in autumn. (zones 5-9)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Virginia Sweetspire<\/strong><strong> (<em>Itea virginica<\/em>) <\/strong>&#8211; blanketed with fragrant blooms in May and\u00a0dependable\u00a0red-purplish\u00a0leaf color in autumn (zones 4-8)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Blueberry <\/strong><strong>(<em>Vaccinium corymbosum<\/em>) &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0grow 2-6 feet tall (depending on variety planted). Plant two or more different varieties for more berries.\u00a0 Blueberries require a highly\u00a0acidic soil pH around 5.0-5.5.\u00a0Its bluish-green summer foliage turns bright red in autumn. (zones 5-8)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arrowwood Viburnum<\/strong><strong> (<em>Viburnum dentatum<\/em><\/strong><strong>) <\/strong>\u2013 an under- planted native viburnum that blooms in May. Fall foliage turns yellow to red to burgundy along with dark blue fruits. (zones 3-8)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10987\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Viburnum-dentatum-1.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10987\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10987\" src=\"https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Viburnum-dentatum-1-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Viburnum-dentatum-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Viburnum-dentatum-1-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10987\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Arrowwood (V. dentatum) fall color<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Witherod<\/strong><strong> viburnum<\/strong><strong> (<em>Viburnum nudum<\/em> \u2018Winterthur\u2019) <\/strong>\u2013white flowers in late spring are followed by bluish black fruits and red to reddish-purple\u00a0 fall foliage. (zone 5-9)<\/p>\n<p><strong>American cranberry bush<\/strong> (<strong><em>Viburnum trilobum<\/em>)<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; tall 12 feet high shrub deep burgundy-red fall leaf color and bright red drupes often persist through winter. (zones 3-7)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Blackhaw viburnum<\/strong> <strong>(<em>Viburnum prunifolium<\/em>)<\/strong> &#8211; flat white cymes (flowers) with numerous yellow stamens and purple-red fall foliage color.
