Anise shrubs (<em>Illicium spp<\/em>.) are fast growing,\u00a0 evergreen shrubs (USDA zones 7 to 10).\u00a0They exhibit a multi-stemmed, upright, compact growth habit. The green foliage of Florida anise (<em>I. floridanum<\/em>) is quite attractive and aromatic, smelling similar to anise spice when crushed. Their shiny, leathery leaves are olive green in color and the 1.5 inch wide dark red flowers appear in early spring.<\/p>\n<p>In general, <em>I. floridanum\u00a0<\/em>shrubs grow 10 to 15 feet tall and should be spaced at least 5 to 6 feet apart in the landscape.\u00a0From Florida to Louisiana, its natural habitats are in wet, swampy areas or along wooded streams in humus-rich acidic soil.\u00a0 Some varieties have demonstrated winter hardiness further north into parts of Tennessee, N. &amp; S. Carolina, and Virginia.<\/p>\n<p><em>Illicium\u00a0<\/em>grows in partial to full shade, but reportedly can acclimate to full sun if irrigated. It prefers moist soil and kept properly mulched and watered during prolonged dry spells.\u00a0 Several cultivars are available including \u2018Alba\u2019 with white flowers and \u2018Shady Lady,\u2019 a variegated leaf form.\u00a0<em>Illicium<\/em>\u00a0\u2018Woodland Ruby\u2019 is an interspecific hybrid between\u00a0<em>I. floridanum<\/em>\u00a0\u2018Alba\u2019 and\u00a0<em>I. mexicanum<\/em>, and produces showy blooms in spring and fall.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Illicium-parv-Florida-Sunshine-3-678x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11929\" width=\"339\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Illicium-parv-Florida-Sunshine-3-678x1024.jpg 678w, https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Illicium-parv-Florida-Sunshine-3-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Illicium-parv-Florida-Sunshine-3-768x1160.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 339px) 100vw, 339px\" \/><figcaption><em>I. parviflorum <\/em>&#8216;Florida Sunshine&#8217;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Yellow anise (<em>I. parvifolium<\/em>), aka small anise, is another Southeast U.S. native. In recent years its popularity has soared with the introduction of new gold leaf cultivars like &#8216;Florida Sunshine&#8217; and Banana Appeal<strong>\u00ae<\/strong>. It is more tolerant of full sun and dry soils than other species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The anise that is used as a spice is derived from a\u00a0different species, Star Anise <em>(Illicium verum<\/em>), an evergreen found in\u00a0southern China and Vietnam.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At\u00a0the J C Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh, NC are 19 different accessions in its collection, including seven cultivars of\u00a0<em>Illicium floridanum<\/em>.   <br>All plant parts of Yellow Anise and Florida Anise are toxic. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is lots of interest in this shrub group.
