Rohdeas are truly collector\u2019s plants (USDA hardiness zones 6-10). In the Orient these lovely shade perennials are highly revered. In traditional Japanese horticulture, <em>sacred lilies<\/em> (known as <em>o moto<\/em>) came to be associated with long life and good fortune. Containers are planted near the entry to courtyards and homes. Over the past two centuries colorful, contorted, ridged, dwarf, giant, or variegated leaf forms have been bred, almost all with Japanese names.<em> <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" src=\"https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Rohdea-japonica-4-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Rohdea-japonica-4-1024x678.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Rohdea-japonica-4-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Rohdea-japonica-4-768x509.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rohdea japonica &#8211; Sacred lily<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Rohdeas are members of the asparagus family <em>(Asparagaceae<\/em>)<em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em>Plants&nbsp;are rhizomatous perennials that grow 8-18 inches high depending on cultivar.  <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well-established clumps produce short-stemmed, creamy to greenish, white bell shaped flowers. The racemes  appear in early spring.  found at the base of the plant. Blooms are mostly hidden within the dense leathery foliage and therefore mostly inconspicuous. Red or orange ornamental berries follow in late fall and last through most of the winter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sacred lilies are simple to grow and live for many years. Plants prefer a moderately moist, humus-rich, well-drained garden soil. They&#8217;re especially adapted to deep shade. Several varieties appear to be reliably hardy to Zone 6. Rohdeas are not troubled by diseases, pests or deer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sacred\nlilies produce dark green, evergreen, strap-like (lanceolate) leaves. They look\nlike a garden-hardy snake plants (<em>Sanseviera<\/em>).\nNew plants start off slowly, but do multiply and form large colonies of ground\ncovering. Numerous divisions over time can help you build a collection which\nyou can trade back and forth with other collectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shopping for <em>Rohdea japonica<\/em>: Plant Delights Nursery in Raleigh, NC lists 17 varieties, the most that I\u2019ve found from any nursery by far.
