I have had experience growing many of them in my Northeast Tennessee garden (USDA hardiness zone 6-b). In a few instances, I have selected a variety that grows in friends&#8217; or a nearby arboretum or botanical garden. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Zagreb\u2019 Coreopsis (<em>C. verticillata<\/em>)\u2013 awesome lemon yellow small daisy like flowers on this mounding long blooming perennial. Other favorites are Uptick\u00ae series; &#8216;Route 66&#8217;. If you want something different, try tall growing (4-6 feet high) <em>C. triptera<\/em> &#8216;Gold Standard&#8217; which blooms from August into October. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shasta Daisy (<em>Leucanthemum x superbum<\/em>)\u2013 lots of pure white daisy flowers on 2-4 feet sturdy stems. Favorite cultivars: \u2018Snowcap\u2019; \u2018Becky\u2019; \u2018Whoops-A-Daisy\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Russian Sage (<em>Perovskia\n<\/em><em>atriplicifolia<\/em>) \u2013 Unique silvery\ncontrasting foliage with long lasting summer to fall dusty blue flowers. \u2018Denim\nN Blue\u2019; \u2018Little Spire\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018May Night\u2019 (Mainacht) Salvia (<em>S. nemorosa<\/em>)\u2013 deep blue flower spikes in spring; prune (deadhead) the entire plant down to a 4-6 inch mounded shape and feed with a nitrogen-based fertilizer to promote new growth and re-bloom within 4-5 weeks. Other favorites: \u2018East Friesland\u2019; \u2018Caradonna\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Garden Phlox &nbsp;(<em>Phlox paniculata<\/em>)\u2013 some great disease resistant varieties are available such as \u2018David\u2019, \u2018Jeana\u2019, \u2018Glamour Girl\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" src=\"https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/DSC_0263-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11943\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/DSC_0263-1024x678.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/DSC_0263-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/DSC_0263-768x509.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Echinacea collection at Kingwood Center<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Purple Coneflowers (<em>Echinacea\npurpurea<\/em>) \u2013 summer full of colorful blooms will fill your garden. Favorites\ninclude: PowWow\u00ae Wild Berry series,\nSombrero\u00ae series, Cheyenne\nSpirit\u2019, \u2018White Swan\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Black eyed Susan (<em>Rudbeckia fulgida<\/em>) \u2013 &#8216;American Gold Rush&#8217;, \u2018Goldstrum\u2019, \u2018Little Goldstar\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daylilies (<em>Hemerocallis spp.<\/em>)\u2013  so many great varieties \u2013 \u2018Happy Returns\u2019, Fooled Me\u2019, \u2018Hyperion\u2019, \u2018Strawberry Candy\u2019, \u2018Red Volunteer\u2019 are all- time personal favorites. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sedums (<em>Sedum spp<\/em>.)\n\u2013 late summer to fall blooming varieties such as \u2018Autumn Joy\u2019; \u2018Autumn Fire\u2019; \u2018Matrona\u2019;\nand lots more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coral Bells (<em>Heuchera\nx<\/em>) \u2013 wonderful accent plant for foliage color; favorites include \u2018Caramel\u2019,\n\u2018Citronelle\u2019, \u2018Sweet Tea\u2019, and many more. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If someone was to create the Garden Performance Hall of Fame for summer flowering perennials, I would nominate this list of ten (10).
