Full service garden centers located\u00a0in\u00a0large\u00a0metropolitan areas may sell one or two.The internet has become the best plant finding source. Some on-line purveyors may\u00a0carry a rare item, but not sell it in\u00a0large quantities. High sticker shock may chase\u00a0you away. If the plant (tree, shrub, vine, perennial, tropical) is new or very rare,\u00a0the nursery\u00a0may price it higher. The principle of \u00a0“supply\u00a0& demand”\u00a0applies here.<\/p>\n
Several months back, a reader of \u201cWhat Grows There\u201d asked where she could purchase pink flowering forms of Chinese dogwood (Cornus kousa<\/em>) for a friend living in northern Ohio.\u00a0A\u00a0pink cultivar (listed under 3 cultivar names: ‘Miss Satomi’, ‘Rosabella’ and ‘Heart Throb’)\u00a0was cited\u00a0at four rare plant nurseries. Radiant Rose\u00ae\u00a0(maybe\u00a0\u2018Miss Satomi\u2019) was also listed.<\/p>\n Another reader was interested in purchasing one of the hybrid yellow flowering magnolias (Magnolia x<\/em>).
