Several are good choices for dwarf conifer collectors, in rock gardens, and in large containers. Winter hardiness of some cultivars is variable. <strong>Note:<\/strong> some are dwarf forms of  \u2018Green Giant\u2019 arborvitae (<em>Thuja standishii x plicata<\/em>) which is a hybrid form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8216;Can-Can&#8217;<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0semi-dwarf, dense, upright tree habit, 8 feet high and 5 feet wide in 10 years; dark green foliage with golden-white tips. (zones 6-9).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018Excelsa\u2019<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;up to 35 feet tall with 20 feet spread; bright green fan-like foliage rated as fragrant. (zones 7-10).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8216;Grune Kugel&#8217;\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211;  ultra-dwarf slow growing dense mound 12 &#8211; 18 inches tall, 18 &#8211; 30 inches wide. (zones 5-8).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018Hogan\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; medium-size columnar grower (40 feet x 20 feet) with dense narrow habit (sometimes mislabeled \u2018Fastigiata\u2019).\u00a0(zones 5-7).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018Junior Giant\u2019\u00a0&#8211; <\/strong>about 40% to 50% the size of <em>Thuja <\/em>\u2018Green Giant\u2019 (about 20 to 25 feet tall and 10 feet wide). Branches seem to be held more horizontally. (zones 4-8\/9).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8216;Pygmaea&#8217; &#8211;<\/strong> irregular\nupright branching; 2-3 feet shrub in 10 years. dense, blue-green foliage, tips may\nturn bronze in winter. (zones 5-8).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Thuja-plicata-Rogers-Aurea-2-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Thuja-plicata-Rogers-Aurea-2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Thuja-plicata-Rogers-Aurea-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Thuja-plicata-Rogers-Aurea-2-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Thuja-plicata-Rogers-Aurea-2.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><em>Thuja plicata<\/em> &#8216;Roger&#8217;s Aurea&#8217;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018Rogers Aurea\u2019<\/strong> &#8211;<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>reaches 4 &#8211; 5 feet high and wide with an oval to globose growth\nhabit; decidedly smaller compared to the standard &#8216;Aurea&#8217; with a broad\npyramidal habit; bright golden yellow foliage outwardly, greenish on inner wood.\nNeedles turn gold\/orange-ish\/bronze color in winter (depending on severity).\n(zones 5-9).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8216;Stoneham Gold&#8217;<\/strong> &#8211;&nbsp;dwarf form to 7 feet tall, compact, upright habit; branch tips are golden-yellow. (zone 7).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018Sunshine\u2019<\/strong>\n(also may be \u2018Canadian Gold\u2019) \u2013 40 &#8211; 70 feet tall, with bright gold needles\nthat reportedly turn off bronze in winter. (zones 5-9)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018Virescens\u2019<\/strong>&#8211;&nbsp;slightly\nnarrower habit, &nbsp;20-30\nfeet tall and 9-12 feet wide. Glossy, dark green foliage holds its green year\nround without winter bronzing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018Whipcord\u2019 <\/strong>&#8211; shrubby, slow-growing, dwarf form<strong> <\/strong>with pendulous whipcord-like green foliage; 2-3 feet tall and wide in 10 years, ages to 4-5 feet; scale-like leaves may turn coppery-bronze in fall. (zones 5-9)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8216;Zabrina&#8217;<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0large tree form, 40 feet at maturity, with broad, pyramidal habit;\u00a0variegated foliage, specially for its bands of green and golden-yellow.
