It is called &#8220;obedient plant&#8221; because each tubular flower will, upon being pushed in any one direction,\u00a0stays in its new position. It grows in sunny, wet poorly drained sites.\u00a0Plant this pink or white flowering beauty in a rain or prairie garden. It is also known as &#8220;false dragon head&#8221;. (USDA hardiness zones 3-9). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Physotegia-2-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Physotegia-2-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14866\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Physotegia-2-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Physotegia-2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Physotegia-2-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">&#8216;Miss Manners&#8217; Obedient Plant (<em>Physostegia virginiana<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This native perennial blooms from July into late September obedient plant. Tubular, two-lipped pink (or white) flowers form in upright terminal spikes (each to 12-18 inches high) atop stems rising 3 to 3.5 feet\u00a0high and 1 to 2 feet wide. Bees and butterflies love the blooms as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Obedient plant (the species) tends to seed-in and also spreads prolifically by rhizomes. The leading cultivar is a\u00a0non-spreading form\u00a0appropriately named\u00a0\u2018Miss Manners\u2019. Its deep green, glossy foliage will please as will its snapdragon-like rose pink flowers. The seedling was chosen by Darrell Probst and is a shorter grower @2 to 2.5 feet\u00a0high and 2 feet wide. Plants display a clumping\u00a0habit with some secondary branching. Obedient plant promptly reblooms when deadheaded.\u00a0Miss Manners tends not to seed-in and it grows on sturdy stems. &#8216;Summer Snow&#8217; is a white flowering cultivar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Full sun and\/or low fertile soil is an ideal garden spot. Otherwise, plants tend to flop and\u00a0require staking in light shade or in rich fertile soils. Prune back plants\u00a0by half in\u00a0late spring for increased branching and to minimize\u00a0floppiness. Plants should be divided every 2-3 years to\u00a0keep beds neat and not overcrowded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Physotegia-1-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Physotegia-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14867\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Physotegia-1-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/whatgrowsthere.com\/grow\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Physotegia-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Multiple planting obedient plant<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Obedient plant has no serious disease or pest problems, and deer generally avoid it. \u00a0In wet summers rust disease\u00a0may be troublesome. Periodically, inspect plants for aphids and spider mites.
