Fall flowering\u00a0trait is often over-hyped, equal to perhaps 5-8% of spring flower numbers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fruits and fall foliage color add little\u00a0ornamental landscape value. Pea sized black fruits ripen in early\u00a0autumn and\u00a0attract numerous\u00a0birds\u00a0who feed on the tiny morsels. Autumn foliage turns greenish yellow before abcising.<\/p>\n<p>Higan cherry grows best\u00a0 in full to partial (6 hours minimum) sunlight and in well-drained soils. It is exceptionally heat and cold hardy\u00a0in the Southern Appalachian region (USDA zones 6 and 7).\u00a0Compared to\u00a0many cherries (<em>Prunus spp<\/em>.),\u00a0Higan cherry is resistant to most serious disease problems.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Be forewarned that\u00a0Japanese beetles and tent caterpillars\u00a0may\u00a0devour summer foliage unless protected with the proper pesticides.
