This creates an untidy\u00a0appearance around the base of\u00a0shrubs and trees. Far worse,\u00a0the root suckers\u00a0may compete for domination over the cultivar graft. They\u00a0may rob photosynthate, water and nutrients from the grafted plant. Eventually, the grafted portion\u00a0may die.<\/p>\n<p>Gardeners select grafted plants for a number of reasons.\u00a0The grafted cultivar may\u00a0exhibit more attractive foliage (e.g. Japanese maples, European beech,\u00a0or\u00a0purple leaf plum) or better disease resistance (e.g. crabapples, callery pears).<\/p>\n<p>Rootsystems also may have desirable features. Dwarf rootstocks reduce the size of apple trees. Hybrid tea roses are mostly grafted on a\u00a0rootsystem\u00a0capable of growing in most soil types.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sucker growth above ground\u00a0may be\u00a0susceptible to fire blight disease, a serious bacterial pathogen which is difficult to control. Aphids, lacebugs, leafhoppers and borers may\u00a0contaminate wood with\u00a0serious virus pathogens.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t attempt to spray the sucker growth with a translocated contact herbicide such as Glyphosate (\u00a0Roundup\u2122 and other trade names) or Phenoxy herbicides such as 2,4-D, dicamba and MCPP).
