If you are designing a Mediterranean look in your garden, choose among select cultivars of these columnar evergreen shrubs:<br \/>\nJapanese holly (<em>Ilex crenata) <\/em>&#8216;Sky Pencil&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Upright boxwood (<em>Buxus sempervirens<\/em>) &#8216;Dee Runk&#8217; and &#8216;Pyramidalis&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Red cedar (<em>Juniperus virginiana<\/em>) &#8216;Taylor&#8217;, &#8216;Brodie&#8217;, &#8216;Blue Arrow&#8217;, &#8216;Idyllwild&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Eastern arborvitae (<em>Thuja occidentalis<\/em>) &#8216;Techny&#8217;, &#8216;Pyramidalis&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Common juniper (<em>Juniperus communis<\/em>) &#8216;Pencil Point&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Alaskan cedar (<em>Chamaecyparis nootkatensis<\/em>) &#8216;Green Arrow&#8217;, &#8216;Van den Akker&#8217;<\/p>\n<div>Hinoki cypress (<em>Chamaecyparis obtusa<\/em> &#8216;Vokel&#8217;s Upright&#8217;)<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Arizona cypress (<em>Cupressus glabra<\/em>) &#8216;Limelight&#8217;, &#8216;Silver Smoke&#8217;<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Rocky Mountain juniper (<em>Juniperus scopulorum<\/em>) &#8216;Skyrocket&#8217;, &#8216;Moonglow&#8217; &#8212; needle foliage breaks down over time in warm 6-b to 7-a summers.
