Autumn is a good time to visit a full-service garden center where year- end plant bargains abound. Your first visit should\u00a0primarily be\u00a0fact-finding. Do not load up on new plants, but seek out new ideas and solutions. Check out patio furnishings,\u00a0grills,\u00a0stonework, or maybe\u00a0exterior lighting\u00a0in key\u00a0areas of\u00a0your garden.<\/p>\n

Shade trees and shrubbery are on sale at 30-50% off, although selection, compared to their spring inventory, is more limited. Spring flowering bulbs are on sale. Bulbs like daffodils, camassias,\u00a0and crocuses\u00a0offer many years of\u00a0floral spring beauty. Tulips and hyacinths are not long-lasting,\u00a0although 3-4 years is not bad. Mix\u00a0in bulbs with winter\/spring blooming pansies and violas for almost 7-8 months of floral color.<\/p>\n

Pinks (Dianthus spp<\/em>.) are planted in late summer and early fall to take advantage of soil warmth. Plants grow out their rootsystems before winter sets in.<\/p>\n

Reminder:<\/strong> guaranteed success with winter blooming pansies and violas\u00a0sets October 15th <\/sup>as the\u00a0key planting deadline.\u00a0If planted later in the fall, these cold tolerant annuals survive, but\u00a0their winter flowering is alot less.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
