Parrotia forms a lovely carefree medium sized lawn or street tree. Tree\u00a0framework is\u00a0vase-shaped, initially narrow at the\u00a0base\u00a0and\u00a0flaring out in\u00a0the\u00a0canopy as it ages. Mature tree height\u00a0varies 25-40 feet, depending on location and the seedling or cultivar planted. Rated hardy in USDA\u00a0 hardiness zone 5, parrotia excels in the Southern Appalachian region (USDA zones 6 and 7).<\/p>\n<p>Tiny flowers\u00a0appear in early March and are rarely noticed along its branches. Clusters of ruby red stamens emerge with no petals. In early spring\u00a0its witchhazel-like foliage starts out reddish-purple and develop into 3-5 inch long leaves. Summer\u2019s lustrous dark green foliage transitions to\u00a0a\u00a0blend of yellow, orange and red\u00a0colors in autumn. Foliage colors\u00a0are effective for\u00a0almost a month.<\/p>\n<p>After 12 &#8211; 15 years\u00a0parrotia&#8217;s smooth gray bark begins to exfoliate. In subsequent year, a\u00a0patchwork of green, white, tan and cinnamon unfolds. Prune away lower branches to\u00a0better\u00a0catch the striking mosaic bark.<\/p>\n<p>Parrotia is long-lived with no serious insect or disease issues. A two-year established parrotia\u00a0resists heat, drought, wind, and urban air pollutants.\u00a0Seasonal leaf colors are more vivid in full to partial\u00a0(6 hours minimum) sunlight and on a well-drained acidic soil site. <strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2018Biltmore\u2019 is most popular\u00a0cultivar which\u00a0exhibits tall and upright branching. &#8216;Pendula&#8217;\u00a0is a\u00a0spreading weeping mound form only 10-12 feet wide with branch tips which tend to\u00a0curve upward.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Within the witchhazel family (<em>Hamamelidaceae<\/em>),\u00a0besides parrotia and witchhazel (<em>Hamamelis spp<\/em>.), are such landscape favorites as sweetgum (<em>Liquidambar spp.)<\/em>, fothergilla (<em>Fothergilla spp<\/em>.) and loropetalum (<em>Loropetalum chinense<\/em>).<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Parrotia (Parrotia persica), aka \u201cPersian ironwood\u201d, is native to Iran, Turkey, and the Caucasus region.
