Broadleaf weed control takes center stage for chores to tackle in home lawns and gardens\u00a0in late summer. Many winter annuals like henbit and chickweed, common inhabitants in the early spring garden\u00a0start to germinate on the\u00a0early days of autumn. Perennial dandelions\u00a0are poking their heads up after summer dormancy. Spring and early summer herbicide applications may not provide as good of control as in\u00a0fall.<\/p>\n

In the spring there is\u00a0the danger of pesticide\u00a0drift onto nearby good landscape plants. In the fall deciduous shrubs and trees are shedding their leaves and\u00a0become less susceptible to the spray drift from Roundup and phenoxy herbicides (active ingredients: 2,4-D, dicamba and MCPP). Be careful not to overapply dicamba\u00a0in\u00a0ground around trees and shrubs you want to keep.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Weedy trees, shrubs and vines are also\u00a0tough to eliminate. \u00a0Examples are poison ivy, English ivy, Virginia creeper, tree of Heaven (Ailanthus<\/em>), and thorny brambles. These are best managed starting in mid- to late-summer. Some broadleaf\u00a0weeds\u00a0such as\u00a0thistles, knotweeds and spurge do not give up easily and multiple applications are the rule.\u00a0Heavy weed invasion in lawns represents poor mowing practices, low soil fertility, or all the above.<\/p>\n

Thoroughly read, understand, and follow all information on herbicide labels.\u00a0Again, never spray on windy days; avoid hot days (over 85 \u00b0F) and herbicide volatility. Don’t spray weeds when they are drought stressed. Do not spray if rainfall\u00a0is forecast within\u00a024 hours\u00a0following application. Don’t mow for\u00a02-3 days before\u00a0or after application.\u00a0Wait a minimum of 30 days before seeding an area treated with broadleaf herbicides.<\/p>\n

Important rule\u00a0on fall spraying:<\/span>\u00a0Outside temperatures should be 60 \u00b0F and warmer\u00a0over a 6 hour interval for\u00a0the foliar herbicide spray to be absorbed inside the target weeds.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
