Over the past 100 years numerous dwarf rootstocks have been introduced.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the degree of dwarfing,\u00a0some rootstocks are more disease and insect resistant.\u00a0 The original East Malling Research Station in England\u00a0(&#8220;EM rootstocks&#8221;)\u00a0reduced tree size and\u00a0led to\u00a0earlier first harvests. However, EM rootstocks\u00a0are not resistant to wooly apple aphid in the southeastern U.S.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A second series from England, designated Malling Merton (MM), are wooly aphid resistant. Check with your local Extension office to determine which pests are prevalent in your area. Apple trees on dwarf rootstocks should not be permitted to crop until the third year after planting.
