The first 3 cultivars released were &#8216;Prima&#8217;, &#8216;Priscilla&#8217;, and &#8216;Sir Prize&#8217;, but they lacked great\u00a0flavor and\u00a0storage quality.<\/p>\n<p>Apples are susceptible to\u00a0four serious diseases: apple scab, cedar-apple rust, fireblight, and powdery mildew. \u00a0Scab, rust and mildew foliar diseases required a rigorous\u00a0fungicide spray\u00a0routine every 7-10 days from\u00a0spring petal fall up to harvest. Fireblight is a bacterial disease without any satisfactory control measures other than pruning off\u00a0dead twigs and branches.<\/p>\n<p>Gardeners are looking for\u00a0better non-pesticide\u00a0(organic) options.\u00a0Here are 5 &#8220;no-spray&#8221; disease resistant varieties:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Liberty&#8217;<\/strong> &#8211; McIntosh type flavor with\u00a0good\u00a0to moderate resistance to all 4 diseases.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Freedom&#8217;<\/strong> &#8211; crispy, slightly tart\u00a0red medium to large fruit for both eating, cooking and juice; 3 month storage life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Goldrush&#8217;<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0crispy, nearly &#8216;Golden Delicious&#8217;\u00a0 in flavor, slightly tart;\u00a0good keeping quality; susceptible to cedar apple rust.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Enterprise&#8217;<\/strong> &#8211; new sprite tasting red skin\/white flesh variety with good keeping quality after harvest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Arkansas Black&#8217;<\/strong> &#8211; old timey variety with good disease resistance;\u00a0tart apple whose flavor improves after 1 month in storage; long keeping time; skin color turns almost black.<\/p>\n<p>The development of disease resistant cultivars has greatly diminished the number of\u00a0fungicide sprays required to grow a successful crop.\u00a0Insect control is still needed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Credit:<\/strong> Dr. David Lockwood, University of Tennessee Fruit Specialist suggested these 5 disease resistant varieties.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over the past 30 years, the goal has been to develop\u00a0good eating and storing\u00a0apples\u00a0which\u00a0are not susceptible to four major diseases.
