Do I need many varieties or can all be the same variety? The four common terms are used:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Self-pollinated:<\/strong> transfer of pollen occurs within the same variety.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cross-pollinated:<\/strong> transfer of pollen occurs between two varieties.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Self-unfruitful:<\/strong> low fruit set unless the blossoms are fertilized with pollen of another variety.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Self-fruitful:<\/strong> varieties that set fruit with their own pollen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Apple:<\/strong> self-unfruitful with two or more varieties required for good cross-pollination. Some varieties are poor pollen providers (\u2018Winesap\u2019, \u2018Jonagold\u2019, \u2018Mutsu\u2019 are examples) and a third variety is required.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pear:<\/strong> mostly self-unfruitful with two or more varieties required for good cross-pollination. Asian pears do not pollinate European pear varieties.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Plum:<\/strong> Japanese plum, represented by varieties \u2018Burbank\u2019, \u2018Shiro\u2019, \u2018Santa Rosa\u2019, and \u2018Methley\u2019, are self-unfruitful. European varieties do not pollinate Japanese varieties.<\/p>\n<p>European plum, represented by \u2018Stanley\u2019 and \u2018Damson\u2019, are self-fruitful and pollinate other European varieties. All other European plums require pollen from another variety.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sour (Tart) Cherry: <\/strong>self-fruitful; recommend \u2018Montmorency\u2019, \u2018Early Richmond\u2019, \u2018Meteor\u2019<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sweet Cherry: <\/strong>self-unfruitful,<strong> <\/strong>cross pollination required; recommend \u2018Hedelfinger\u2019, \u2018Ranier\u2019, \u2018Viva\u2019, \u2018Valera\u2019, \u2018Venus\u2019, \u2018Hardy Giant\u2019.
