What happens when the plants (in photo)\u00a0get too close to the small deck(s)? Access to the deck from the stairs will become impossible as the evergreens swallow up the entire\u00a0back yard. Looking out from the deck and windows from the home\u00a0won&#8217;t be likely within 5 years.<\/p>\n<p>Here are six better low growing evergreen alternatives in the\u00a012-25 foot height range which should\u00a0be\u00a0better fit\u00a0into this landscape are:<\/p>\n<p>Leatherleaf viburnum (<em>Viburnum rhytidophyllum<\/em>) @12-15 feet in 15 years<\/p>\n<p>Prague viburnum (<em>Viburnum<\/em> x <em>pragense<\/em>) @8-12 feet<\/p>\n<p>Skip laurel (<em>Prunus laurocerasus<\/em> \u2018Schipkaensis\u2019) @8-12 feet<\/p>\n<p>Emerald arborvitae (<em>Thuja occidentalis<\/em> &#8216;Smaragd&#8217;) @18-20 feet<\/p>\n<p>Foster No. 2 holly (<em>Ilex x attenuata<\/em> &#8216;Foster No. 2&#8217;) @16-18 feet<\/p>\n<p>Nellie R. Stevens holly (<em>Ilex x cornuta<\/em> &#8216;Nellie R. Stevens&#8217;) @18-20 feet<\/p>\n<p>Another\u00a0option is a plant a hedge row of evergreens such as hemlock (<em>Tsuga canadensis<\/em>), white pine (<em>Pinus strobus<\/em>), or upright junipers (<em>Juniperus chinensis<\/em>). Evergreens would require pruning at least once a year.<\/p>\n<p>In the Southern Appalachian region (USDA hardiness zones 6 and 7), Leyland cypress is not a good choice for an average size residential lot.
