Hybrid crape myrtles (Lagerstroemia fauriei x indica<\/em>) have undergone significant\u00a0makeovers over the past quarter century. \u00a0Several new cultivar series continue to arrive garden centers, including: Black Diamond\u2122 series, Enduring Summer\u2122, Delta\u2122 series, and Magic\u2122 series.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

In landscape terms size is very important and gardeners often make a serious error when not calculating the size of crape myrtle for the planting space. Crape myrtles \u00a0fall into four\u00a0size categories. Included here are\u00a0a sampling of the major cultivars based on popularity in the mid-South region (Northern Atlanta thru Eastern Maryland):<\/span><\/p>\n

Four Height Groups and Flower Color<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dwarf (less than 5 feet)<\/strong>
\n‘Pocomoke’ – rose pink
\n‘Berry Dazzle’ – fuchsia
\n‘Cherry Dazzle’ – vibrant red<\/p>\n

Semi-dwarf (5 to 12 feet)<\/strong>
\n‘Acoma’ – pure white
\n‘Dwarf Centennial’ – lavender
\n‘Hopi’ – light pink
\n‘Tonto’ – fuchsia (red)
\n‘Zuni’ – medium lavender<\/p>\n

Intermediate (13 to 20 feet)<\/strong>
\n‘Apalachee’ – light lavender
\n‘Dynamite’ – cherry red
\n‘Lipan’ – medium lavender
\n‘Osage’ – light pink
\n‘Sioux’ – dark pink<\/p>\n

Tree type (23 feet and higher)<\/strong>
\n‘Carolina Beauty’ – dark pink
\n‘Muskogee’ – light lavender
\n‘Natchez’ – white
\n‘Tuscarora’ – dark coral pink
\n‘Tuskegee’ – dark pink, almost red<\/p>\n

New crape myrtle series:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Black Diamond\u2122<\/a>\u00a0Series – 10 to 12 feet high and 8 feet spread with almost black foliage. Currently there are 9 cultivars ranging from red shades, pink shades, white, purple, and lavender.<\/p>\n

Magic Series\u2122<\/a> from First Editions\u00ae is a selection of intermediate size crape myrtles with glossy\u00a0disease-free foliage; they bloom all summer into fall and hold their leaves until late. Currently there are 8 cultivars in the series of various sizes and color range.<\/p>\n

Delta Series\u2122<\/a>\u00a0are part of the Southern Living Plant Collection (USDA hardiness zones 7-9); there are currently four cultivars in four colors: white, red, lavender,\u00a0and light pink; foliage- unique burgundy, cupped leaves; grow between 6-10 foot tall.<\/p>\n

Enduring Summer\u2122<\/a>\u00a0are part of the Garden Debut Plant Collection\u00a0(USDA hardiness zones 7-9); \u00a0there are 6 cultivars and grow 4-5 feet tall and wide<\/p>\n
