In human terms, it takes a lifetime to grow an acorn into a mighty oak.\u00a0Many tree species live hundreds of years, often asking little and contributing\u00a0much beauty, summer cooling shade, winter heating comfort\u00a0as windbreaks, and a food source for birds, insects, and other animals.<\/p>\n<p>Select seeds from trees\u00a0of\u00a0exceptional parent stock.\u00a0You may want to collect acorns around an historical site, such as Andrew Jackson&#8217;s Hermitage\u00a0near Nashville, TN or Thomas Jefferson&#8217;s Monticello\u00a0just outside\u00a0Charlottesville, VA.\u00a0Pick seeds or nuts\u00a0from a parent or grandparent&#8217;s property.<\/p>\n<p>If you are asked to serve on a tree planting project this spring, do volunteer, not\u00a0only at\u00a0digging time, but on the summer maintenance detail. Young trees need nurturing as do young children. When summer is at its hottest and driest, you should be standing by the tree(s) with hose in hand.
