About 4-5 weeks\u00a0back, the leafy growth (vegetative)\u00a0stage\u00a0of the surprise lily (<em>Lycoris radiata<\/em>), also called \u201cresurrection lily\u00a0or \u201cnaked ladies\u201d, appeared (<strong>left and center photos<\/strong>).\u00a0When last seen\u00a0in late July and August, brightly colored stalks\u00a0of lycoris flowers had popped through with no leaves present. The floral stalks have since\u00a0withered and\u00a0disappeared.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The strap- shaped lycoris leaves emerged for their photosynthetic stage, to\u00a0build or renew\u00a0food storage reserves in their roots. Cutting or mowing off the foliage\u00a0would be\u00a0detrimental to\u00a0the promise of flowering next summer.<\/p>\n<p>New leafy foliage of Italian arum (<em>Arum italicum <\/em>&#8216;Pictum&#8217;) (<strong>right photo<\/strong>) has also arisen. Its new bright green metallic arrowhead shaped foliage is poking through the fallen leaves\u00a0which litter the shade garden. Its glossy green arum foliage\u00a0arrives for the\u00a0winter and spring seasons\u00a0to form an evergreen ground cover.<\/p>\n<p>Both lycoris and Italian arum are examples of long-lived perennials which thrive in a richly composed, well-drained soil.
