White fruited varieties are also sold, but the purple forms\u00a0are most popular. This 6-8 foot shrub has medium green, 3-5 inch long\u00a0foliage spring thru summer.\u00a0Autumn leaf color adds\u00a0little, the deciduous leaves turning purple to pale yellow, shriveling,\u00a0and abcising.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0purple fruit clusters are\u00a0electifying, perhaps nature at its gaudiest.\u00a0Individual fruits\u00a0measure 1\/4 inch or less in size, and clustered together around the stems, creating\u00a0quite a show. Numerous species of birds feed on the fruits,\u00a0either\u00a0from the\u00a0Japanese (<em>C. dichotima<\/em>) and native (<em>C. americana<\/em>) forms.<\/p>\n<p>Clusters of pink or\u00a0lavender colored\u00a0flowers open\u00a0in mid-July, and are mostly unnoticed because of their small size; flowers are somewhat hidden\u00a0within the\u00a0thick foliage.<\/p>\n<p>Grow\u00a0beautyberry\u00a0so\u00a0the magnificent\u00a0late summer\u00a0fruit\u00a0display\u00a0may be\u00a0easily seen.\u00a0Beautyberry thrives in full sun to partial shade (as little as 1 hour of sunlight needed). Its soil needs are average, although beautyberry grows and fruits best\u00a0under full day sun and in moist well drained soils. Mulch plants to\u00a0reduce weeds and to conserve soil moisture.<\/p>\n<p>Prune to remove winter injured branches (in USDA zone 5)\u00a0and to open this dense growing shrub\u00a0to\u00a0additional sunlight. Heavier pruning may be required to control its wild-like nature further south. All pruning\u00a0should be completed by mid-spring. Flowers and fruits\u00a0form on new season&#8217;s growth.<\/p>\n<p>Viable seeds are dispersed into your landscape and\u00a0your neighbors&#8217; yards as well.
