Planted properly, the boulder appears to emerge naturally from the bowels of the earth.\u00a0The crowning achievement\u00a0is when mosses and lichens find a home in its crevices or\u00a0when vines crawl over them.<\/p>\n<p>Boulders may\u00a0exhibit seams of color(s), deep crevices, and\/or have jagged or rounded edges. Is the rock, stone , or boulder best displayed from a vertical or horizontal position? Boulder may provide multiple landscape uses from a child climbing over it or the gardener looking for a comfortable sitting stool.<\/p>\n<p>A recent addition to\u00a0our garden is a 250 pound\u00a0rock (photo on left).\u00a0Our stone\u00a0has a broad muscular base and a flat\u00a0gray\/blue face (side facing the street). On rainy day\u00a0the darker blue color comes forth. A\u00a0couple of\u00a0strong friends help move, orient, and set the rock\u00a0in its permanent spot. We &#8220;posed&#8221; our rock, turning it to catch its showiest side(s) from inside the home\u00a0and curbside. Neighbors, joggers and\u00a0and dog walkers\u00a0get to view the muscular side from curbside.<\/p>\n<p>A wide shallow hole was dug around the base to \u201croot\u201d\u00a0and support the boulder firmly. Plant your rock shallow!
