A living Christmas tree\u2014one that\u2019s planted outdoors after the holidays\u2014has\u00a0become a tradition with many families to commemorate\u00a0a birth or\u00a0someone’s passing.<\/p>\n

Purchase\u00a0a live Christmas tree and plant it in\u00a0your landscape after the holidays. Pre-dig\u00a0a planting\u00a0hole ahead because\u00a0outdoor weather may not be suitable for\u00a0digging. For safety sake, fill it with leaves or mulch to prevent freezing or cover it with a board or piece of plywood so no one accidentally falls into it.<\/p>\n

Choose an evergreen\u00a0species that grows well in your plant zone. Your choice includes eastern red cedar, white pine, Norway spruce, and Colorado blue spruce. Frasier fir (Abies frasieri<\/em>), a\u00a0very popular Christmas tree, prefers\u00a0a cool mountain location above 3500 feet elevation (USDA hardiness zones 4-7) and will not be a good landscape tree. Over the past quarter century Leyland cypress has become a popular choice\u00a0in warm parts of the Southeastern U.S.<\/p>\n

Here are some planting steps:<\/p>\n

  1. Examine the rootball and top (leader) before you purchase.\u00a0Rootball\u00a0for a 6-7 foot tree should measure 30 inches or more in diameter, tied, and wrapped\u00a0tightly in cloth burlap.<\/li>\n
  2. Dig a shallow\u00a0hole twice the diameter\u00a0of the rootball.<\/li>\n
  3. Unload\u00a0the tree and\u00a0be\u00a0careful not to damage the rootball.<\/li>\n
  4. Place the rootball in\u00a0a tub or container large enough\u00a0to snugly\u00a0support it.<\/li>\n
  5. Water\u00a0rootball\u00a0if it feels dry to the touch; do not let tree stand in water.<\/li>\n
  6. Tree should not stay indoors for more than 10 days.<\/li>\n
  7. Use LED lights which emit little heat and are energy efficient.<\/li>\n
  8. Inspect rootball moisture every 3 days.<\/li>\n
  9. Move\u00a0tree\u00a0to\u00a0an unheated garage or basement\u00a0until you’re\u00a0ready to plant outside.<\/li>\n
  10. Plant outdoors in prepared hole, water\u00a0and\u00a0add 3 inches of an organic\u00a0mulch around tree.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
