Hydrangea ‘Quick Fire’<\/p><\/div>\n

Panicle, PeeGee or PG hydrangeas (Hydrangea panculata<\/em>) brighten up\u00a0the\u00a0July and August garden landscape.\u00a0They’re\u00a0native to China and Japan.<\/p>\n

They\u00a0grow and bloom almost anywhere in the U.S.\u00a0(USDA hardiness zones 3 – 8). Unlike mophead hydrangeas (H. macrophylla<\/em>), that\u00a0often fail in\u00a0full day sun,\u00a0PGs excel in 6\u00a0hours or more of sun.<\/p>\n

PG\u00a0hydrangeas are vigorous growers with upright branching\u00a0and\u00a0coarse textured deciduous foliage. Depending on variety, shrubs grow\u00a03-15 feet (some to\u00a025 feet) tall. Multi-branched shoots are clothe with dark green, oval shaped\u00a0leaves and are topped with\u00a0upright, sharply-pointed, conical, 6-8 inch long terminal flower panicles. Flowers may be a mix of both fertile and sterile florets and\u00a0bloom from mid-summer into fall. PG hydrangeas are pruned any time from late fall to mid-spring. They\u00a0may also be trained into a tree form.<\/p>\n

Most gardeners today know PGs by the best selling cultivar ‘Limelight’ <\/strong>which has become the standard for excellence. It grows 6-10 feet tall (depending on amount of annual pruning provided); heavy with 6-8 inch,\u00a0conical shaped, terminal flower panicles; branching is very upright.<\/p>\n

‘Little Lime’<\/strong> –\u00a0grows 5-7 feet\u00a0tall; large, tightly packed, lime-white\u00a0flowers that turn shades of pink where summers are cool.<\/p>\n

‘Quickfire’<\/strong> –\u00a0grow 6-8 feet tall\u00a0and equally wide;\u00a0\u00a0blooms are white, become\u00a0pink after a few weeks,\u00a0and finish\u00a0rosy-pink.<\/p>\n

Bobo\u2122<\/strong> – this Belgium introduction\u00a0is a very\u00a0compact size that is ideal\u00a0size-wise in\u00a0small gardens and patio containers; large white loose blooms\u00a0midsummer to fall.<\/p>\n
