There are numerous \u201cchoose and cut\u201d Christmas tree growers in the Southern Appalachian region (USDA zones 6 and 7). Trees are harvested by the tens of thousands in the mountainous\u00a0locales and are shipped nationally and internationally. You\u00a0can also purchase\u00a0a tree from\u00a0a large chain store\u00a0or a local\u00a0tree lot.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The evergreen species with best needle retention include: \u00a0fraser fir, douglas fir, and balsam (Canaan) fir, \u00a0followed by white pine and Scotch pine.\u00a0Norway spruce rates the poorest in needle retention.\u00a0 Canadian or the western U. S. growers\u00a0ship Balsam fir and Douglas fir trees into the region\u00a0in time for post Thanksgiving sales. These trees\u00a0are\u00a0harvested 4 &#8211; 6 weeks\u00a0ahead because of shipping and weather concerns.<\/p>\n<p>When shopping at a tree lot, shake or bounce the tree\u00a0to check needle retention. Needles should be soft and fragrant.<\/p>\n<p>Re-cut the base (butt) of the tree, removing\u00a0at least 1 inch\u00a0prior to setting\u00a0it into\u00a0a stand indoors. Secure the tree and fill the water reservoir. Inspect the reservoir daily\u00a0for water uptake.
