Sycamore maple, aka planetree maple\u00a0(Acer pseudoplatanus<\/em>) is indigenous to northern and\u00a0central Europe where it is\u00a0a popular landscape tree. Very commonly planted\u00a0in the northeastern U.S.\u00a0in the early 20th century, this large\u00a050-60 foot tree is rarely\u00a0found today (USDA zones\u00a04 and 7).\u00a0 A mature specimen in Jonesborough, Tennessee (zone 6)\u00a0is over 80 feet in height.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0popularity of\u00a0native red (A. rubrum<\/em>) and sugar\u00a0(A. saccharum<\/em>) maples\u00a0is the likely reason that it is no longer planted. Sycamore maple\u00a0exhibits subpar summer heat tolerance which\u00a0excludes its use in the southeastern U.S. The 4 – 6 inch broadly palmate leaves\u00a0feel sand-papery to the touch. Leaf petioles are 4-5 inches long.\u00a0Mature specimen trees display\u00a0grayish brown bark which chips off in tiny narrow strips to expose\u00a0orange-red inner wood. Its green clusters flowers in spring contribute little to\u00a0the tree’s\u00a0overall stature; leaves\u00a0turn a bland\u00a0yellowish brown before abscising.<\/p>\n

There are two diminutive cultivars which are more deserving your planting attention. \u2018Brilliantissima\u2019 exhibits salmon pink spring foliage which turns bright lime-green in summer. \u2018Esk Sunset\u2019 foliage starts off with pink, green and white variegation, and turns lemony green in the summer. Both cultivars grow very slowly,\u00a0 perhaps to less than a third the size of\u00a0species (20-40 feet in height and 12-15 feet in spread).<\/p>\n

Sycamore maple grows in\u00a0average well-drained soil and is not pH sensitive, even high lime soils. Leaves are exceptionally tolerant of salt and urban air pollutants. Annual growth rate is fast and the upright branches of this hardwood maple are very sturdy. Sycamore maple\u00a0distribute thousands of fertile double winged samaras (“whirligigs”)annually and\u00a0seeds invade surrounding landscapes. Pennsylvania lists sycamore maple as invasive.<\/p>\n
