Start with large leafy trees that are hardy in zones 6-7 include catalpa (<em>Catalpa spp<\/em>.), hickories (<em>Carya spp.<\/em>), some oaks (<em>Quercus spp<\/em>.), large leaf maple (<em>Acer macrophylla<\/em>), American sycamore (<em>Platanus americana<\/em>), American linden (<em>Tilia americana<\/em>), and Empress tree (<em>Paulownia tomentosa<\/em>). These five underplanted magnolias are highly dependable trees in large landscapes &#8212; Bigleaf (<em>Magnolia macrophylla<\/em>), Ashe magnolia (<em>M. ashei<\/em>), (<em>M. tripetala<\/em>), and cucumber magnolia (<em>M. accuminata<\/em>). Cutback these young trees in late fall and new spring growth will sprout with much larger leaves and will not flower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hardy bananas (<em>Musa basjoo<\/em>) and angel trumpets (<em>Brugmansia<\/em>) thrive zone 7 hardy and in protected areas of zone 6b. Protect the\u00a0roots and crowns with a winter blanket of mulch or pine needles. Both species dieback to the ground surface in fall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>GROW TROPICALS AS ANNUALS<\/strong> &#8211; Leafy tropical favorites such as papyrus (<em>Cyperus papyrus<\/em>), caricature plant (<em>Graptophyllum pictum<\/em>), elephant ears (<em>Colocasia<\/em> &#8216;Thailand Giant&#8217;), and variegated tapioca plant (<em>Manihot esculenta<\/em> &#8216;Variegata&#8217;) grow rapidly. Buy young vegetative plants to pre-started in a warm greenhouse @ minimum 60\u00b0F temps prior to safely planting outdoors when the frost threat has passed.
