Dove tree (<em>Davidia involucrata<\/em>) is a medium-size tree from China.\u00a0Mature dove trees\u00a0are 30-40 feet in height and 20-30 feet in width. A young tree exhibits a pyramidal form and forms\u00a0a rounded canopy at maturity. The coarsely textured 4 &#8211; 5 inch circular leaves are bright green with\u00a0no significant\u00a0fall color,\u00a0dropping either pale green\u00a0to brown.<\/p>\n<p>In early May dove tree in bloom is\u00a0an awesome\u00a0sight to behold.\u00a0 All attention is focused on the two uneven white bracts, one 7- inches long and 4- inches wide and a second\u00a0shorter 4- inches long anf\u00a02- inches wide bract. A slight breeze rustling past\u00a0the two white bracts creates an illusion of dove wings aflutter, earning such pseudonyms like &#8220;handkerchief tree&#8221; and &#8220;ghost tree&#8221;. The\u00a0true \u00be- inch wide dome flowers are insignificant.<\/p>\n<p>Ordinarily,\u00a0you must wait ten or more years for dove tree to bloom the first time (and not every year). \u2018Sonoma&#8217; is a new cultivar which flowers reliably within 2 &#8211; 3 years after planting and does so annually. \u00a0As the tree ages, its scaly orange- brown bark offers minor winter interest.<\/p>\n<p>Dove tree need to be properly sited\u00a0in a\u00a0moist well-drained loamy soil in the Southern Appalachian region (USDA hardiness zones 6 and 7).\u00a0Guard against extreme summer heat and winter cold blasts and irrigate during summer dry spells.\u00a0 Disease and pest problems are as rare as dove trees.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Dove tree may be purchased from specialty plant nurseries on the internet or from mail order.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Up for a challenge.
