Mother Nature surely did not schedule it this way.<br \/>\nHere are ten plants (plus an extra) that are blooming in late August thru the coming weeks:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stonecrops or Sedums <\/strong>(<em>Sedum x spectabile<\/em>) &#8211; \u2018Autumn Joy\u2019, \u2018Matrona\u2019, \u2018Autumn Fire\u2019, &#8216;Brilliant&#8217;, many others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Goldenrod<\/strong> (<em>Solidago spp<\/em>.) &#8211; <em>S. rugosa <\/em>&#8216;Fireworks&#8217;, <em>S. sphacelata <\/em>&#8216;Golden Fleece&#8217;, others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Toadlilies<\/strong> (<em>Tricyrtis spp<\/em>.) &#8211; catching on with shade gardeners searching for fall bloom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fall anemones <\/strong>(<em>Anemone x hybrida<\/em>) &#8211; favorites include &#8216;Honorine Jolbert&#8217;, &#8216;Queen Charlotte&#8217;, &#8216;September Charm&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fall mums <\/strong>(<em>Dendranthemum x grandiflorum<\/em>) &#8211; select old-fashioned perennial types such as \u2018Ryan Gainey\u2019, &#8216;Clara Curtis&#8217;, \u2018Sheffield Pink\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fall sunflowers <\/strong>(<em>Helianthus spp<\/em>.) &#8211; plants grow tall (4 to 7 feet) covered with showy yellow flowers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fall blooming asters <\/strong>(<em>Symphyotrichum spp<\/em>.)- \u2018October Skies\u2019, \u2018Raydon\u2019s Favorite\u2019, \u2018Purple Dome\u2019 are three of the best to try.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Encore azaleas<\/strong>: \u2018Autumn Ruby\u2019, \u2018Autumn Amethyst\u2019, \u2018Autumn Lilac\u2019, and another 16 cultivars are hardy in zone 6. A number of the new Bloomathon\u2122 azalea series are also zone 6 hardy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brassicas<\/strong> include the flowering cabbages and kales. For best results, plant mid-August and net plants to fend off cabbage butterflies. Change out those tired summer annuals with fresh pansies and violas. Pansies are actually violas. Viola blooms are petite and a rave with gardeners these days. Yes, you need to purchase more violas to fill the garden space. Violas bloom more in frigid January and February than pansies. Maximize winter bloom by completing planting before October 1 in zone 5 and before October 15 in zone 6.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Autumn crocus and colchicum <\/strong>are two bulbs that are planted in the cool fall (by late September in zone 5 and mid-October in zone 6).
