Low spreading plants are blanketed with small petunia-like flowers from spring until frost.\u00a0Blooms hold up well to rain showers and do not need to be deadheaded. Plants are heat-tolerant and disease resistant.<\/p>\n<p>Grow\u00a0calibrachoas as you would petunias; they excel in containers and hanging\u00a0baskets. Calibrachoas\u00a0measure 6 to 12 inches high and 24 to 48 inches spread. Showy flower colors range from lavender, blue, red, pink, salmon, orange,\u00a0yellow, white; blooms attract hummingbirds, butterflies and bees.<\/p>\n<p>Calibrachoas grow best in full sunlight.\u00a0In the deep south, a\u00a0site that favors morning sun and afternoon shade is preferred. After\u00a0the\u00a0threat of spring frost has subsided, plant them in containers filled with a well-drained organic-based potting mix. Space plants 12 to 16 inches apart. If grown in garden\u00a0beds,\u00a0a moderately\u00a0acidic soil is best;\u00a0mid-summer leaf yellowing is a symptom of a high pH or alkaline soil.After planting add 2-3 inches\u00a0of mulch.\u00a0Overwatering or a\u00a0poorly drained soil is the death knell of calibrachoas.<\/p>\n<p>Supplement with a slow release fertilizer such as Osmocote\u2122 or Nutricote\u2122 according to package directions. Calibrachoas in containers may be nurtured with a water-soluble acidic fertilizer such as Miracle-Gro\u2122,\u00a0Schultz\u2122, Daniels\u2122\u00a0biweekly.<\/p>\n<p>Aphids can become major pests on new growth.\u00a0 Freshen\u00a0plants\u00a0with a late summer shearing\u00a0using a scissors or pruning shears.\u00a0 Clipping encourages renewed growth and flowering.
