In the northern\u00a0U.S.\u00a0its lacy evergreen foliage turns brown in the dead of winter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Here in the Southern Appalachian region,\u00a0microbiota prospers in cooler parts of zone 6 and is troubled by\u00a0summer heat and heavy clay soils in zone 7. Its medium green summer foliage develops a purple to bronze cast in winter. Spring warm-up\u00a0restores\u00a0its green needle color.\u00a0Growth rate is\u00a0slow to medium. Adjacent to\u00a0my driveway microbiota cascades over a low retaining wall.<\/p>\n<p>Substitute microbiota where you\u00a0routinely plant ground cover junipers.\u00a0Low growing microbiota ranges\u00a010-12 inches in height and spreads\u00a0from 6-8 feet in width. It is tolerant of dry shade.\u00a0Deer and most disease and insect pests don&#8217;t bother it.\u00a0It enjoys good soil moisture drainage and cool temperatures, and\u00a0tolerates windy exposed sites once it\u00a0becomes fully\u00a0established.<\/p>\n<p>Microbiota is not commonly sold at local garden centers, but may be purchase at specialty evergreen nurseries or through internet commerce.
