Growth rate averages\u00a03\u00a0&#8211; 4\u00a0 feet annually. Leylands are very care-free the first 10 years, except they&#8217;re\u00a0suffer during long\u00a0summer dry spells. Plant them 12-15 feet apart\u00a0with frequent\u00a0irrigation the first 2-3 years. They become too tall for their space. As\u00a0shrubs age, their susceptibility to fungal diseases also increases.\u00a0Pruning off\u00a0dead or diseased wood is the only remedy, usually\u00a0requiring working on a\u00a0tall ladder. Plant spacing is 12 -16\u00a0feet apart.<\/p>\n<p><b>Japanese Cedar<\/b> (<i>Cryptomeria japonica<\/i>) (zones 5-8) is another\u00a0fast grower at\u00a030-40 feet tall and 20-25 feet wide in 30 years. Winter foliage tends to turn bronze colored, but green needle color returns\u00a0in early spring. Cryptomerias may become susceptible to Cercospora leaf spot disease if shrubs are crowded too close together. Three-year and\u00a0older established\u00a0shrubs are very drought tolerant. Plant spacing is 12-14 feet apart.<\/p>\n<p><b>&#8216;Green Giant&#8217; arborvitae <\/b>(zones 5-7)\u00a0is a hybrid\u00a0between west coast native arborvitae (<i>T. plicata<\/i>) and\u00a0Japanese arborvitae (<i>T. standishi<\/i>). Growth rate starts slow, but Green Giant gets 25-35 feet tall and 15-18 feet wide in 30 years. They are moderately drought tolerant and mostly disease and pest resistant.\u00a0Plant spacing is 10-12 feet apart<\/p>\n<p><b>Emerald\u00ae Eastern arborvitae<\/b> (<i>Thuja occidentalis &#8216;<\/i>Smaragd&#8217;) (zones 3 -7)\u00a0is slowest grower of the four, a semi-dwarf shrub with\u00a0a compact, narrow pyramidal habit. Also called \u201cEmerald Green\u201d arborvitae, it\u00a0has glossy,\u00a0dark green, flat sprays of scale-like foliage. Grows 20 to 30 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide at maturity.
