They are heat and drought tolerant, and are\u00a0not fussy, growing in\u00a0average soil with subpar drainage.<\/p>\n<p>Distyliums are members of the witchhazel family (Hamamelidaceae). Their\u00a0tiny\u00a0reddish-maroon flowers appear in late January through March, but\u00a0offer\u00a0little\u00a0ornamental value in the winter landscape. Current hybrid selections are favored for their compact growth habit, burgundy new foliage color.\u00a0 Annual growth rate averages 8-10 inches.\u00a0Distyliums serve as alternatives for time-honored evergreen foundation shrubs such as\u00a0cherry laurels (<i>Prunus laurocerasus<\/i>), junipers (<i>Juniperus spp<\/i>.), hollies (<i>Ilex spp<\/i>.), and boxwoods (<em>Buxus spp<\/em>.).<\/p>\n<p>Space plants 2 to 4 feet apart (depending on cultivar and intended use in the landscape) as a specimen, low hedge or a groundcover.<b> <\/b>In early spring feed distyliums with water soluble (Miracle Gro, Peters, Jacks, or Daniels brand names) or granular fertilizers such as generic 10-10-10 or Holly Tone\u2122 are applied according to package recommendations for evergreen shrubs.
