Siebold viburnum (<em>V. sieboldii<\/em>) is a large\u00a0spring flowering species from eastern Asia \u00a0(USDA hardiness zones 5-7), but is under-planted in today&#8217;s gardens.\u00a0This multi-trunk large shrub to 12 to 15 feet\u00a0high or 25 to 30 feet tall as a small tree.<\/p>\n<p>This large, coarsely-textured shrub is covered\u00a0with clusters of\u00a0creamy white flowers in mid-spring (late May into June). Clusters of edible berry-like fruits (drupes) follow, each 1\/3 inches\u00a0in diameter;\u00a0drupes\u00a0eventually\u00a0turn pinkish red starting in late August. Birds and other wildlife\u00a0snap up the ripened black\u00a0fruits\u00a0fall into winter. The smooth light gray bark\u00a0is a winter asset.<\/p>\n<p>Dark\u00a0green prominently\u00a0veined\u00a0leaves hang on long into\u00a0autumn, eventually turning yellowish green before abscising.\u00a0This naturally large multi-branched shrub is easily trained into a small tree\u00a0and is a good choice for planting\u00a0under power lines.\u00a0Fashioning a young shrub into a small tree via pruning is not difficult.<\/p>\n<p>Siebold viburnum grows and blooms more abundantly in full sun on a\u00a0well-drained, moist,\u00a0moderately acid soil.\u00a0Two-year established shrubs are moderately shade and drought tolerant. It is rarely troubled by\u00a0diseases and\u00a0pests.<\/p>\n<p>Plant enmasse to develop a tall hedge or thicket to shelter wildlife and provide them\u00a0a feeding station.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Two cultivars of note:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ironclad\u2122<\/strong> (&#8216;KLMfour&#8217;) grow 15 feet tall and 12 feet wide with rugged foliage which gives striking\u00a0coarse textured look<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Seneca&#8217;<\/strong> (U.S. National Arboretum introduction) is\u00a0exceptionally hardy (zone 4) with lustrous dark green leaves that often hold on until late November.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; The genus Viburnum\u00a0is no stranger to U.S. gardens.\u00a0Many species and cultivars of viburnums are popular.
