The improved shrub roses introduced almost two\u00a0decades ago have\u00a0brought this too\u00a0reality. Rose series such as Knockout\u00ae, Home Run\u00ae, Drift\u00ae, OSO Easy\u00ae, Carefree\u00ae\u00a0and Meidiland\u2122 are among the best.<\/p>\n<p>No matter the pedigree of the rose, selecting a poor site, doing something wrong, and\u00a0new disease problems can disappoint your love affair with roses. Providing a good environment makes growing\u00a0roses\u00a0a lot more enjoyable:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Plant in soil with good moisture drainage<\/li>\n<li>At least 6 hours of sunlight<\/li>\n<li>Adequate spacing between shrubs to allow good air circulation<\/li>\n<li>Shelter from high or drying\u00a0winds<\/li>\n<li>Little competition from other plants<\/li>\n<li>Irrigate\u00a0ground\u00a0but keep foliage dry (drip, soaker hoses); best time to water is\u00a0early morning<\/li>\n<li>Fertilizers:\u00a0either a water soluble fertilizer (3-4 times in growing season\u00a0thru early September); <strong>or<\/strong> 10-10-10 (in early spring and mid-July); <strong>or<\/strong> slow release fertilizer once in early spring.<\/li>\n<li>Organic fertilizers (as alternative):<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>N (nitrogen) -horse manure &#8211; yes!; cow manure \u2013no! (full of weed seeds)<\/li>\n<li>P (phosphorus)\u00a0 &#8211; roses crave P, very important; sources: bone meal, rock phosphate<\/li>\n<li>K (potassium) &#8211;\u00a0improve summer heat tolerance<\/li>\n<li>Minors-\u00a0Fe (chelated iron) and\u00a0Mg (Epsom salts)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Mulch with 2-3 inch layer of pine needles, bark chips or nuggets around bushes, but not against trunks.<\/li>\n<li>Keep roses weed-free as weeds compete and also\u00a0attract harmful bugs and diseases<\/li>\n<li>Prune roses in late winter or spring when dormant or starting to bud out<\/li>\n<li>Prune in summer to remove disease wood, particularly rose rosette or other virus problems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; A\u00a0goal of most rose gardeners (rosarians)\u00a0is to grow them almost maintenance free.
