I overheard\u00a0a customer complain about the “outrageous” prices for plants, particularly the newly introduced ones. Here is some of the whys:<\/p>\n

Certain\u00a0plants are difficult to reproduce. Occasionally, stores may stock some expensive items like paperbark maple (Acer griseum<\/em>) and fringetree (Chionanthus virginicus<\/em>). These two plants are\u00a0difficult to propagate, slow growing,\u00a0and demand will overshadows supply.\u00a0Both will find a customer.<\/p>\n

Some plants are slow growing. Some dwarf hinoki cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa<\/em> ‘Nana’) sell\u00a0at\u00a0two price points. Some cultivars are faster growing and lower priced compared to very dwarf types that may be 3-4 times more expensive. Slow dwarf grower will likely never outgrow its garden space or rarely need pruning maintenance.<\/p>\n
