Other\u00a0hydrangea species, such as smooth hydrangea (<i>H. arborescens<\/i>), panicle hydrangea (<i>H. paniculata<\/i>), and oakleaf hydrangeas, should not be affected.<\/p>\n<p>Bigleaf hydrangeas\u00a0are highly sensitive to wild rollercoaster temperature changes during winter dormancy.\u00a0Although modern day cultivars possess better cold hardiness, pre-formed\u00a0spring flower buds are in danger. Mild temperatures push\u00a0buds to swell, responding to a false spring.<\/p>\n<p>All may not lost! Hardier bigleaf hydrangeas, such as the Endless Summer\u2122 and All Summer\u00a0 Beauty\u2122 series are also\u00a0in jeopardy for spring bloom losses. They may\u00a0still bloom on new spring wood\u00a0this summer, although flowering may be delayed by several weeks and flower heads\u00a0may be small and fewer in number.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Still more troubles\u00a0ahead? <\/strong>Bigleaf hydrangeas\u00a0often respond to an\u00a0early spring warm-up by breaking dormancy early and produce new shoots and leaves. Sudden spring freezes may\u00a0severely damage growing buds. In severe situations\u00a0several branches or whole plants may not\u00a0bloom thru the summer months.
