Over the past decade,\u00a0the zonal or bedding\u00a0class of\u00a0geraniums (Pelargonium x hortorum<\/em>)\u00a0have\u00a0become\u00a0summer favorites in northern gardens (USDA hardiness zones 3-7).\u00a0Geraniums thrive in cool weather, but are also widely planted in zones 9-10 gardens where\u00a0winter temperatures are moderate.\u00a0Increasing numbers of colorful varieties beautify\u00a0flower beds and container gardens.<\/p>\n

Leaves are marked by distinctive bands or \u201czones\u201d of dark markings. Single or double blossoms are clustered into ball-shaped heads. Most\u00a0zonal geraniums are seed produced and color choices include red, pink, salmon and white. Plants are compact in habit.<\/p>\n

Geraniums should be planted in a compost-rich, well-drained garden soil or\u00a0peat-based media for containers.\u00a0Plant in\u00a0full day sunlight\u00a0to\u00a0attain maximum blooming potential. Space plants 8 – 12 inches apart. Mulch to moderate soil temps and\u00a0reduce weed infestations. Feed a granular fertilizer such as 10-5-10 at planting time and\u00a0supplement with\u00a0any water soluble fertilizer such as Miracle-Gro\u00ae, Peters\u00ae, or Schultz\u00ae every\u00a03-4 weeks\u00a0up to\u00a0the first days of autumn.<\/p>\n

When purchasing plants at garden center,\u00a0choose those that are compact in\u00a0habit, with blemish-free foliage, and\u00a0full with\u00a0flower buds.\u00a0Zonal geraniums do not\u00a0require constant\u00a0deadheading, but\u00a0monthly removal of seed heads will increase bloom numbers.<\/p>\n

Zonal geraniums are\u00a0disease and pest resistant when properly sited in the landscape. Geraniums prosper with summer irrigation. Geraniums need good air circulation, but need protection from strong winds. Over dry summer intervals, geraniums require weekly watering. Do not over irrigate geraniums as it will\u00a0increase fungal\u00a0leaf spots and dreaded botrytis diseases.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
