They hail from\u00a0China and Japan and\u00a0grow almost anywhere in the U.S.\u00a0(USDA hardiness zones 3 &#8211; 8). PG hydrangeas are far more reliable in northern areas (zones 3-5), than mophead hydrangeas (<em>H. macrophylla<\/em>). They flower at their best in\u00a0full to partial day sunlight (6\u00a0hours or more).<\/p>\n<p>PG\u00a0hydrangeas are vigorous growers. Branching is upright and their deciduous foliage is coarse textured. Depending on cultivar, PG hydrangeas\u00a0grow\u00a03-15 feet, and 20-25 feet tall in tree form. Multi-branched shoots are clothe with dark green, oval shaped\u00a0leaves and are topped with\u00a0upright, sharply-pointed, conical, 6-8 inch long terminal flower panicles. Flowers may be a mix of both fertile and sterile florets and\u00a0bloom from mid-summer into fall. PG hydrangeas are pruned any time from late fall to mid-spring. They\u00a0may also be trained into a tree form.<\/p>\n<p>Most gardeners are well acquainted with\u00a0the popular\u00a0cultivar Limelight\u2122<strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0the standard for excellence in PG hydrangeas. Limelight\u00a0grows 6-10 feet tall (depending on amount of annual pruning provided). Its smaller size of 3\u00a0by 5\u00a0feet .<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bobo\u2122<\/strong> &#8211; grows\u00a0very\u00a0compact size, the perfect size in\u00a0small gardens and containers; large white loose flowers appear from midsummer to early fall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Bombshell&#8217;<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0 is dwarf (compact) form with\u00a0abundant star-shaped sterile flowers with elliptic sepals, dense nearly round flower panicles, and free blooming habit. It blooms earlier and longer than most other panicle hydrangeas. Flowers emerge white and\u00a0slowly turn\u00a0rosy pink. Strong stiff stems hold the flower panicles upright with no drooping.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Little Quickfire\u00ae<\/strong> &#8211; is a shorter of Quickfire,\u00a0growing 3-5 feet tall with\u00a0creamy spikes that turn to deep pink with red highlights on bold, red stems.<\/p>\n<p>Bacterial wilt, leaf spot, rust, and mildew diseases and aphids and mites are occasional disease and insect problems.
