There are lots of effective crabgrass preventatives sold at garden shops, hardware stores,\u00a0and farm supply centers.<\/p>\n<p>There are numerous trademarked products. It is important to read and understand package instructions. The principal product tradenames (and active ingredients)\u00a0are:<\/p>\n<p>Barricade\u00ae (prodiamine)<\/p>\n<p>Dimension\u00ae (dithiopyr)<\/p>\n<p>Echelon\u00ae (prodiamine + sulfentrazone)<\/p>\n<p>Pendulum\u00ae (pendimethalin)<\/p>\n<p>Ronstar\u00ae (oxadiazon)<\/p>\n<p>All products should not be used on newly seeded, sodded or sprigged\u00a0lawns.\u00a0In addition\u00a0several store brands (not listed here) may contain the same or a different active ingredient.<\/p>\n<p>Pre-emergent crabgrass control is your best option. Apply the herbicide in late winter to early spring before the crabgrass seed germinates.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than choosing a calendar date as an application\u00a0deadline, use\u00a0forsythia, a\u00a0common\u00a0spring flowering\u00a0shrub,\u00a0for your\u00a0timing guideline.\u00a0If 80 % of forsythia flowers have dropped, expectations for\u00a0good\u00a0crabgrass control falls off if a pre-emergent preventative has not been applied.<\/p>\n<p>These products provide 85% effective crabgrass control\u00a0up to 100 days after application. A second application is required in late spring or early summer for a\u00a0crabgrass free summer.<\/p>\n<p>One\u00a0additional tip is to irrigate after applying the herbicide,\u00a0an equivalent of\u00a01\/2 \u00a0inch of rainfall.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What grows there?
