This coming spring take some action by\u00a0planting trees that should\u00a0perk\u00a0up its appearance. New tree choices\u00a0should ratchet up seasonal interest, attract more bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds in the spring-summer and hungry fruit feeding birds in fall-winter.<\/p>\n<p>Making smart tree choices can add four-seasons of interest to your yard. In making your shopping choices, look for\u00a0such arbor\u00a0features as\u00a0branch architecture, bark color(s), foliage texture, flowering, and resulting seeds and\u00a0fruits.<\/p>\n<p>Some of my favorites of trees with winter\u00a0season appeal are:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dogwoods:<\/strong>\u00a0flowering dogwood (<em>Cornus florida<\/em>), Chinese dogwood (<em>C. kousa<\/em>) and Japanese cornel (<em>C. officinalis<\/em>). All three offer winter or spring\u00a0flowering,\u00a0unique\u00a0horizontal branching, fruiting, and autumn leaf color. Latter two species show off exfoliating bark in winter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Japanese maple (<\/strong><em>Acer palmatum<\/em><strong>)<\/strong>: including coral bark variety \u2018Sango Kaku\u2019 and yellow bark of \u2018Bihou\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Paper bark maple <\/strong>(<em>Acer griseum<\/em>): stunning cherry red exfoliating bark.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trifoliate maple<\/strong> (<em>Acer truncatum<\/em>): nice exfoliating tan colored bark.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Birches:<\/strong> River birch (<em>Betula nigra<\/em> Heritage<strong>\u00ae<\/strong> or Dura Heat <strong>\u00ae<\/strong>), Himalayan birch (<em>B. jacquemontii<\/em>), and paper birch (<em>B. papyrifera<\/em>) &#8211; all with brightly colored exfoliating bark (latter two birch species for\u00a0northern areas within USDA hardiness zones 2-6).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Crabapple <\/strong><em>(Malus spp.<strong>)<\/strong><\/em>:<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>this spring blooming tree (hundreds of varieties), many bearing\u00a0colorful fruits that invite birds to your property.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ornamental Flowering Cherry <\/strong>(<em>Prunus spp.<\/em>): some varieties exhibit\u00a0stunning ruby red bark color.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hollies <\/strong>(<em>Ilex spp<\/em>.): female forms produce\u00a0full crops of with bright red fruits. Yellow berried forms\u00a0are also available.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Green Hawthorn <\/strong>(<em>Crataegus viridis<\/em> \u2018Winter King\u2019): bright red fruits cover branches during the winter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Japanese Stewartia<\/strong> (<em>Stewartia pseudocamellia<\/em>): patchy exfoliating creamy colored inner bark.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Persian Ironwood <\/strong>(<em>Parrotia persica<\/em>): patchy exfoliating bark exposing a light colored inner wood.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ginkgo <\/strong>(<em>Ginkgo biloba<\/em>):\u00a0this\u00a0ancient deciduous large landscape tree with brightly colored triangular fall foliage\u00a0and grayish-brown furrowed\u00a0bark.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Crape myrtles<\/strong> (<em>Lagerstroemia spp<\/em>.): choice of many cultivars; strong muscular bark that exfoliates to reveal colorful\u00a0inner wood.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Does your winter landscape look a bit shabby?
