‘Ace of Hearts’ redbud – no seed pods<\/p><\/div>\n

Perhaps you don’t like picking up messy fruits and seeds from your lawn in the fall and winter. Choose landscape trees that have seedless cultivars. A true seedless variety is an easy choice to\u00a0avoid fruit cleanup.<\/p>\n

Below are a few non-fruiting or seedless cultivars available at nurseries. Not all plants listed are recommended for all\u00a0home landscapes. For example, avoid planting any species of ash (Fraxinus spp.<\/em>) because of the threat of Emerald Ash Borer \u00a0(EAB) infestaations. So do your homework before purchasing.<\/p>\n

A few of my personal favorites include: \u00a0‘Autumn Blaze’ hybrid maple, ‘Espresso’ Kentucky coffeetree, any male ginkgo, \u00a0‘Slender Silhouette’ sweetgum, and ‘Ace of Hearts’ and ‘Don Egolf’ redbuds.<\/p>\n

Boxelder (Acer negundo<\/em>) \u2013 male cultivars ‘Baron’<\/p>\n

Red Maple (Acer rubrum<\/em>) \u2018Flame\u2019, \u2018Northwood\u2019<\/p>\n

Silver maple (A. saccharinum<\/em>) \u2018Beebe Cutleaf Weeping\u2019, \u2018Silver Queen\u2019, \u2018Skinneri\u2019<\/p>\n

Hybrid maples (Acer x<\/em> freemanii)<\/em> \u2018Celzam\u2019, \u2018Autumn Blaze\u2019, \u2018Jeffersred\u2019 (nearly seedless)<\/p>\n

Red horse chestnut (Aesculus x carnea<\/em>) \u2013 Ruby, \u2018Briotti\u2019 (almost fruitless)<\/p>\n

\u2018Baumann\u2019 Horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum<\/em> \u2018Baumannii\u2019)<\/p>\n

Redbud (Cercis canadensis<\/em>) \u2018Ace of Hearts\u2019, \u2018Flame\u2019 (double flowered)<\/p>\n

Chinese redbud (Cercis chinensis<\/em> \u2018Don Egolf\u2019) – no seed<\/p>\n

American persimmon (Diospyros virginiana<\/em>) – male clones<\/p>\n

Honeylocust (Gleditsia triacanthos<\/em> f. inermis) \u2018Fairview\u2019, \u2018Green Glory\u2019, \u2018Imperial\u2019, \u2018Moraine\u2019, \u2018Shademaster\u2019, \u2018Skyline\u2019, \u2018Sunburst\u2019<\/p>\n

Hollies (Ilex spp<\/em>.) -male clones<\/p>\n

Sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua<\/em>) \u2018Rotundiloba\u2019, Happidaze\u2122, \u00a0‘Slender Silhouette\u2019<\/p>\n
