Ornamental grasses and ferns are not listed here. One steadfast rule that you must follow if this group of plants are to work for you:\u00a0\u201cchoose the right plant for the right site\u201d. Shady plants in full sun and terrestrial plants in swampy ground are no-nos. If these plants are properly planted, all should\u00a0prosper.<\/p>\n<p>In most locations (zones 5-7), they\u2019re long-lived and are disease and insect free. Many (except where indicated) flowering perennials prefer full sun and humus-rich well-drained soil.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The list:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Italian arum\u00a0<\/strong>(<em>Arum italicum<\/em>)<em>\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; bright variegated foliage arise in fall and grow through winter; red cluster berry fruits appearing in late spring; partial to full shade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Baptisia or wild indigo\u00a0<\/strong>(<em>Baptisia spp<\/em>.) &#8211; full sun; purple, blue, yellow or white flowers appear in mid-spring.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coreopsis\u00a0<\/strong>(<em>Coreopsis spp<\/em>.) &#8211; full sun and moderate soil moisture; many cultivars including single-, semi-, or double- petalled yellow flowers bloom in late spring thru summer if deadheaded.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lenten rose<\/strong> (<em>Helleborus x hybrida<\/em>) \u2013 many great cultivars to choose from; partial shade; mid-to late winter flowering.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Catmint<\/strong> (<em>Nepeta x faassenii<\/em>) \u2013 several great cultivars including \u2018Walker\u2019s Low\u2019 and &#8216;Six Hills Giant\u2019; spring-summer flowering.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cranesbill, hardy geranium<\/strong> (<em>Geranium spp<\/em>.) \u2013 lots of great cultivar choices available; partial shade; spring flowering, popular cultivar \u2018Rozanne\u2019 blooms intermittently from late spring to autumn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chinese astilbe<\/strong> (<em>Astilbe chinensis<\/em>) \u2013 many cultivars; easier to grow compared to<em> A. x arendsii<\/em>; morning sun; late spring-early summer blooming.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fairy Wings, barrenworts<\/strong> (<em>Epimedium spp<\/em>)<em>\u00a0&#8211;<\/em> excellent ground cover ; early spring flowers; deciduous or evergreen varieties available; partial to full shade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Siberian iris <\/strong>(<em>Iris sibirica<\/em>) \u2013 green, black and variegated foliage and numerous flower colors; full sun.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Daylilies<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>Hemerocallis x<\/em>) &#8211; over 70.00 varieties to choose from. Select those suited to your regional\u00a0location; shop at a daylily grower in your locale.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Peony\u00a0<\/strong>(<em>Paeonia officinalis<\/em>) \u2013 hundreds of great cultivar choices available; full to partial sun; mid-spring flowering.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Russian sage<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>Perovskia atriplicifolia<\/em>) &#8211; full sun; mid-summer and later bloomer; several new dwarf or compact growing cultivars such as \u2018Denim and Lace\u2019, \u2018Little Spire\u2019, \u2018Filigran\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Variegated Solomon seal<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>Polygonatum odoratum<\/em>\u00a0\u2018Variegatum\u2019) &#8211; bright\u00a0variegated foliage, flowering is secondary; partial shade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tall sedum<\/strong>s (<em>Sedum x spectabile<\/em>) \u2013 several cultivars; full sun; summer flowering.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lilytuft, Monkeygrass<\/strong> (<em>Liriope muscari<\/em>) \u2013 part to full sun; many cultivars including with dark green \u2018Big Blue\u2019, striped \u2018Variegata), and chartreuse (\u2018Peedee Ingot\u2019); clumps 8-12 inches high; Spike-like clusters of pale violet to white flowers in mid to late summer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here is a list of flowering perennials that\u00a0need little care after planting.
