It is also called elkhorn cedar and deerhorn cedar, referring to the shape of\u00a0its scale-like leaves. Occasional watering is recommended\u00a0in\u00a0severe summer\/fall\u00a0dry periods. False arborvitae needs to be sheltered from\u00a0dry winter winds.<\/p>\n<p>Winter foliage color may vary\u00a0by location and cultivar planted.\u00a0In Southern Appalachian Region (USDA zones 6 and 7), winter foliage takes on a\u00a0muted olive-green tone.<\/p>\n<p>Two most popular dwarf clones are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8216;Aurea&#8217; &#8211; a\u00a0dense shrub with golden yellow foliage; grow in light shade.<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Nana\u2019 &#8211; a slow growing, dwarf mounding form with good plant symmetry; its wintry foliage takes on a silvery tint.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A 10-year old &#8216;Aurea&#8217; or\u00a0&#8216;Nana&#8217; thujopsis grows 3 to 4 feet tall\u00a0and 5 to 6 feet wide.<\/p>\n<p>False arborvitae is hard to find in the nursery trade, available thru e-commerce specialty nurseries.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hiba or false\u00a0arborvitae (Thujopsis dolobrata)\u00a0is a slow to moderate growing evergreen shrub or tree.
